Movie Review: Pirate Radio

Cast: Philip Seymour HoffmanBill NighyRhys Ifans,Nick FrostKenneth Branagh

Directed by: Richard Curtis

Plot description (from Yahoo movies): In the 1960s a group of 8 rogue DJs on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, played rock records and broke the law all for the love of music. The songs they played united and defined an entire generation and drove the British government crazy. By playing rock ‘n roll they were standing up against the British government who did everything in their power to shut them down.

My take: This movie has been out for a couple of weeks now and I never really had a huge urge to see it. I mean it looked good but I was never begging anyone to go watch it with me. Turns out me and my parents all had a free night on this splendid Thursday, and lucky for us because it is the last night that my theatre is playing the film! So right from the get-go I was obviously grooving to the music, of course I knew that it was going to be a major part of the movie because I came into it knowing very well what it was all about. I honestly think that I had a smile plastered on my face for the entire duration of Pirate Radio. The cast was brilliant and the writing was really well done – there were so so so many hilarious parts (lots of British humour so it probably doesn’t appeal to every single person).
For me one of the greatest surprises was somewhat new-to-the-scene actor Thomas Sturridge who plays Young Carl, a boy sent to the boat by his mother supposedly for his bad behaviour at school. Thomas is oh so charming and his boyish good looks really don’t hurt too much either! While watching this movie I had the same kind of heart warming feeling that I get everytime I watch ‘Love Actually’ (one of my absolute favourite movies)! They share a couple of the same actors [Bill Nighy & Emma Thompson] and of course they both have mainly British ensemble casts. Well turns out that they both share the same director as well! No wonder I got that lovey dovey Love Actually vibe.
Pirate Radio is definitely going down in the love of my life movies book (a book that I obviously do not actually have..). Music junkies all over the world have surely taken to this gem in the same fashion as I have!
