My Summer (and beyond) Reading List

June 21, 2010 at 12:39 pm (Uncategorized)

Since I’m finally done school, I should now have actual free time to do one of my favourite things in the world… and that would be to…. READ! I like to keep lists of books that catch my interest so that I don’t forget about them before I have time to read them.

So this will be the place where I will do such that.

Books I own:

The Carrie Diaries – Candace Bushnell (summer)

My Sister’s Keeper – Jodi Picoult (summer)

At First Sight – Nicholas Sparks

A Complicated Kindness – Miriam Toews

Dewey – Vicki Myron

Books I don’t own:

The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald (summer) (summer)

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner – Stephenie Meyer (summer) (summer)

Dracula in Love – Karen Essex

Something Borrowed – Emily Giffin

Kings of the Earth – Jon Clinch

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake – Aimee Bender

The Book of Negroes – Lawrence Hill

Both Ways is the Only Way I Want it – Maile Meloy

My Name is Mary Sutter – Robin Oliveira

The Madonnas of Echo Park – Brando Skyhorse

Dombey and Son – Charles Dickens

Freedom – Jonathan Franzen

so far…. 4 books down… one of which (My Sister’s Keeper) I had been reading since the movie came out!! It was during school so the reading was very sporadic. So glad to finally finish it.

Finally started taking books out of the library as opposed to always buying them, you would think when someone is trying to get a career in libraries that they would probably use them eh!? haha

Now about to start Dracula in Love, the same classic story, but from the point of view of the famous heroine (Mina Murray). Pretty excited, not gonna lie!

..to be continued..

Favourite passage from “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult

June 16, 2010 at 4:29 pm (Uncategorized)

“If there was a religion of Annaism, and I had to tell you how humans made their way to Earth, it would go like this: in the beginning, there was nothing at all but the moon and the sun. And the moon wanted to come out during the day, but there was something so much brighter that seemed to fill up all those hours. The moon grew hungry, thinner and thinner, until she was just a slice of herself, and her tips were as sharp as a knife. By accident, because that is the way most things happen, she poked a hole in the night and spilled a million stars, like a fountain of tears.

Horrified, the moon tried to swallow them up. And sometimes this worked, because she got fatter and rounder. But mostly it didn’t, because there were just so many. The stars kept coming, until they made the sky so bright that the sun got jealous. He invited the stars to his side of the world, where it was always bright. What he didn’t tell them, though, was that in the daytime, they’d never be seen. So the stupid ones leaped from the sky to the ground, and they froze under the weight of their own foolishness.

The moon did her best. She carved each of these blocks of sorrow into a man or a woman. She spent the rest of her time watching out so that her other stars wouldn’t fall. She spent the rest of her time holding on to whatever scraps she had left.

Pirate Radio: One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while!

November 27, 2009 at 1:10 am (Movies) (, , )

Movie Review: Pirate Radio

Cast: Philip Seymour HoffmanBill NighyRhys Ifans,Nick FrostKenneth Branagh

Directed by: Richard Curtis

Plot description (from Yahoo movies): In the 1960s a group of 8 rogue DJs on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, played rock records and broke the law all for the love of music. The songs they played united and defined an entire generation and drove the British government crazy. By playing rock ‘n roll they were standing up against the British government who did everything in their power to shut them down.

My take: This movie has been out for a couple of weeks now and I never really had a huge urge to see it. I mean it looked good but I was never begging anyone to go watch it with me. Turns out me and my parents all had a free night on this splendid Thursday, and lucky for us because it is the last night that my theatre is playing the film! So right from the get-go I was obviously grooving to the music, of course I knew that it was going to be a major part of the movie because I came into it knowing very well what it was all about. I honestly think that I had a smile plastered on my face for the entire duration of Pirate Radio. The cast was brilliant and the writing was really well done – there were so so so many hilarious parts (lots of British humour so it probably doesn’t appeal to every single person).
For me one of the greatest surprises was somewhat new-to-the-scene actor Thomas Sturridge who plays Young Carl, a boy sent to the boat by his mother supposedly for his bad behaviour at school. Thomas is oh so charming and his boyish good looks really don’t hurt too much either! While watching this movie I had the same kind of heart warming feeling that I get everytime I watch ‘Love Actually’ (one of my absolute favourite movies)! They share a couple of the same actors [Bill Nighy & Emma Thompson] and of course they both have mainly British ensemble casts. Well turns out that they both share the same director as well! No wonder I got that lovey dovey Love Actually vibe.
Pirate Radio is definitely going down in the love of my life movies book (a book that I obviously do not actually have..). Music junkies all over the world have surely taken to this gem in the same fashion as I have!

Songs to match my life

November 25, 2009 at 9:59 am (Music)

You know those songs out there that can define a moment in your life? Or they can just impact you so much that you feel that initial feeling that you had the first time you heard it every single time thereafter?

Here is the place that I will stencil those songs. I do not want their presence to ever leave my side.

  • Sweet Disposition – The Temper Trap [I first heard this song while watching the movie "500 Days of Summer." The lyrics are great but more than that is the way the music moves throughout the song. The lead singer has an amazing voice as well.]
  • Change In My Life – Hanson [This is off of the Take the Walk EP. It is a gospel cover and is done so acappella. Everything about it is absolutely stunning and there's nothing I love more than to listen to it playing really loudly while I sing to it - trying to sing a different part of the harmony each time. They way those boys' voices mesh together sends shivers down my spine everytime.]
  • So You Can Cry – Ne-Yo [I don't think anyone truly knows about my love & appreciation for Ne-Yo. This is one of my favourite songs off of his album "Year of the Gentleman." It has a bluesy feel to it and in a way it almost reminds me of a Stevie Wonder song?? I can't really explain why, but I just get that vibe from the song.]
  • Alone In The World – Everybody Else [Saw them sing this live when they opened for Hanson on the 'The Walk' tour. Love this song the most on their acoustic album. The lyrics are simple and yet very fitting. The melody is beautiful as well.]
  • Hands Down – Dashboard Confessional [This song stirs up many emotions.. happy, sad & everything in between. I've loved it since the first time I heard it. It's definitely one of my 'go to songs']

*that is all for now, but I will surely be updating this post as I think of more songs to add that match my life at any given moment.
